Team Dynamics

I had several interesting conversations today with my team. There are 6 people I work directly with, and their skill sets vary greatly from one to the other. We discussed the fundamental (and age-less) tension between creatives and tacticians. One particular arena that involves both personalities is the creation and maintenance of a new website. Let’s just say worlds collide.

The beautiful thing is…I like it. I like the tension. I embrace it. It makes my team better, smarter, stronger. But a warning: that tension has to be navigated with a high sense of dignity and honor from one person to the next. Otherwise it can easily slip into cynicism and criticism. No project is worth damaging another person’s unique wiring. So embrace the tension, honor one another, and hopefully the by-product (at least in our case) is a way cool website.

Bricks and Mortar

So Easter is this weekend, and for anyone in Creative Arts this is an intense season. Amazing, but intense. Right now there are several things that we’re addressing to be ready for our dress rehearsal and first service on Friday night. And by “address” I mean talk through, call through, email, ichat, troubleshoot, call back, text, group text, find solutions, momentarily freak out, talk about more solutions, and call it a night. But I love it…

Greg Smith is a bricks and mortar type guy. Full time staff member, communications director, and weekend producer for Milestone Church. He does a lot of stuff no one sees, but it’s all important…especially when it comes to Easter. I’m grateful that he’s detail-oriented, takes pride in the small things, and has a great heart in the process. Hopefully your staff has a guy like him. Lucky for us…we do.

Generosity

I’ve been thinking about generosity lately. Not so much my own, but that which has been extended to us. Our home in Atlanta has been on the market for the past 11 months, and I’m excited to say it’s finally sold! Along the way we’ve experienced the generosity of others in such a way that it’s challenged my perspective on giving to others. Anytime you’re humbled by someone’s gift…let it motivate you to plant a seed in the life of someone else. You’ll find out as we did that the joy of giving surprisingly exceeds that of receiving.

Emmaus rehearsal

Tonight is one of 6 remaining rehearsals for Emmaus…Milestone’s Easter presentation. I’m struck by the amount of talent assembled for this. Duncan Brannan is a gifted writer/actor, and has brilliantly given direction to our team of actors. I’m also excited about our three vocalists who’ll each perform a song: Blake Campbell, Jeanne Rogers, and Kendyl Shaw. Plus, the supporting media is down right impressive, and I think you’ll be wowed by it. All told, we’re 2.5 weeks out and I’m confident that Easter at Milestone will be amazing. Easter is coming…

As of today, Easter is about 3 weeks away. For most creative directors, especially those that work in the local church, this is one of the most exciting times of the year. Granted, there are always moments of stress, but that comes with being a creative director. The people I work with to create events are amazing: Greg Smith, Blake Campbell, Betsy Caswell, Kevin Simons, Daniel McCarthy, and Chris Sigler all play an integral part in event planning.
